Mountain Hardwear Mountain Tech Jacket

You want a windproof fleece jacket?  No problem.  That’s what the designers of the Mountain Hardwear Mountain Tech Jacket must have been after!  With Mountain Hardwear’s AirShield Core liner, go ahead and face the arctic winds with this jacket, remembering some Smartwool or Icebreaker base-layers or you’ll freeze, but you won’t feel the wind at all!

The casual fit of this jacket almost asks you to get a smaller size than you normally would.  Compared to the Icebreaker Teton jacket which an XXL is to narrow for me, here the XL almost feels loose, but comfortable for sure!  The pockets are rather high on the sides, feeling a tad awkward when hanging around with your hands in the pockets, but definitely something you get used to rather quickly.

As with most Mountain Hardwear products the details count…like the micro-chamois chin guard to ensure your chin is protected from the zipper with a super plush lining.  The dual drawcords make for some nice and easy adjustments to ensure just the perfect fit.

Mountain Hardwear put their Deflection Softshell material everywhere that needs some articulation or some water resistance, allowing a small rain shower to be no problem.  High pockets allow great storage for some gear…or the casual cell phone.  Did you say it’s a tad too warm?  Also not a problem!  Simply open the convient pit-zips and keep on adventuring!

Update: Using this jacket under Mountain Hardwear’s Ampato Rain Jacket is nearly the perfect combination of warmth and rain/water protection.  The layers worked awesome today as I was outside in a wet heavy snow (31°F) for 6 hours today.  Didn’t sweat, didn’t get wet!  Was warm the entire time.  Highly recommend using the two layers together!

Update:  Used the jacket today along the shores of Lake Erie, with a stiff 25-30mph wind coming from the north over the lake on a 22° sunny day and the jacket was perfect…layered with a single Smartwool 250g Midweight layer underneath it.  After a month of use, the jacket shell is showing little to no signs of wear, and continues to look brand new.
