When certain gear stands out leaps and bounds ahead of anything you’ve ever used, it’s impressive. Today that’s the NiteRider Lumina 650 Wireless Headlight. After using it for the first time after dark last night, it shined as one…no…as THE best bike headlight I’ve ever used. When I say that, it’s for a multitude of reasons.
First, let’s talk about design. It’s got a quick release design to allow it to easily attach to either your handlebars or your helmet (both mounts included) in seconds…what’s that? You have a fat handlebar? No problem. And at a mere 172 grams, you’re not adding too much weight to throw off your bike’s handling, or your helmet’s center of gravity for that matter.
Turn the Lumina 650 on and that’s when you really see it come to life…an intense 650 lumens kill the night and turn the path in front of you with a nice cool white beam, very consistant from side to side. It’s needed to note that this is indeed a beam light, not a flood light, so don’t assume it’s going to light the entire region around you, instead it’s going to directly light the path in front of you.
There are 4 beam intensities powered by the Li-Ion battery, offered by a simple click through the top button:
High – 650 Lumens – 1.5 Hour Runtime
Mid – 400 Lumens – 3 Hour Runtime
Low – 250 Lumens – 5.5 Hour Runtime
Walk – 40 Lumens – 18 Hour Runtime
With the top button being able to cycle through the options with a simple press. You can also enter a strobe function to help ensure you’re safe during daylight as well. Enter strobe by holding down the top button for 3 seconds. At full power, the Lumina 650 runs hot, therefore if you’re storing the light, it’s advised to lock the light in the off position by holding the power button down for several seconds, until after the strobe function is activated. Holding down the top button when in lock mode for several seconds until the button flashes and turns blue, release and the light is unlocked ready to light the night!
More testing and photos to come soon, stay tuned for more testing and more fun!
