Sometimes a headlamp is absolutely perfect, other times it’s a pain in the rear to have on your head all the time!  While out camping, Snow Peak has come up with a great lightweight (1.9oz without batteries) option which will get any gear junkie to look twice!  The Snow Peak Mini Hozuki Lantern
is a lantern with a magnetic rubberized ball attached through a rubber lanyard, allowing you to hang the lantern from nearly anything in your tent (or from your hammock ridge line!) and light up your camp area.

Side note: The Hozuki name comes from the plant Physalis alkekengi, whose Japanese name is Hozuki.  Snow Peak has great ties to Japan, where the Mini Hozuki Lantern is made!

How much light are we talking about here?  Holding down the LED cover for 2 seconds causes one single flash and then the brightest light comes on, being 60 lumens (1 lumen = 1 birthday candle…approximately…).  Another click dims the lantern to the low setting, approximately 1/2 the brightness, and another click causes a strobe effect.  One last click turns the whole thing off.  Go ahead and turn it back on again, this time, if you hold down the LED cover, you’ll notice the lantern dims to whatever level you desire.  Another click and it’s off again.

…But wait, there’s more!

When the lantern is on high, if you double-tap the LED cover, something rather special happens…the lantern goes into true lantern mode, having an effect as if it’s a flame flickering in the breeze!  Yes, that’s right, it’s like you have a candle lantern now, without the dangers of fumes, heat and flames to scare you!  Very nice touch by Snow Peak if I may say so myself!

For a few more technical specs, you’ll have a lantern that’s IPX4 standard, meaning that it can take a decent splash of water without any ill effects.  Before inserting 3 AAA batteries, the whole setup only weighs 1.9oz, so it won’t weigh down your backpack too much!  On those 3 AAA batteries you’ll find about 40 hours of use on high, 70 hours on low, and 180 hours on strobe mode.

Good idea to keep one around no batter if you’re swinging in your hammock trying to read or if you’re in bed with a place to hang it nearby for a nighttime reading light, it’s sure to please you!

Do be cautious with the rubber “globe” that surrounds it, it’s easily lost if you’re not careful!  Also note that install batteries, you slide off the rubber “globe” and twist the top off of the bottom, this will open the unit and allow you to put batteries in it!

These are basic simple things to think about. Your camping equipment needs will vary depending on where you will be camping. Camping on the beach has different needs then camping in the mountains. You should always start your foray into camping small. Take a day trip somewhere close to your home. Check out the surroundings and the camp sites. Get an understanding of what the equipment needs will be.^
